Language Arts

Curriculum Leader: Ms. Song, 8th Grade ELA

6th Grade

Language Arts for 6th graders is an integration of Language skills: (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Viewing, and Media Literacy...(Research), through Ancient World History Cultures. The collaboration of the subjects will result in a theme based curriculum. Similar targeted skills will be our focus for mastery in both subjects yielding retention and comprehension for all students. Our curriculum is web based and can be accessed directly from home. Many assignments will started, (or practiced) from home, submitted, and used for class or group discussion the following day. Looking forward to a successful year for all.

7th Grade

Welcome to 7th Grade Language Arts! The purpose of this course is to provide integrated education experience in the language arts strands of reading, writing, listening, viewing, speaking, language and literature. This includes:

  • using the reading process to construct meaning from a wide range of literary, informational, and technical texts
  • using the writing process to communicate information and ideas
  • using listening, viewing, and speaking strategies
  • understanding the power of language and using language in authentic contexts
  • understanding the common features of a variety of literary forms
  • responding critically to visual, oral, and written texts

For their nightly practice, our students will choose Reading Counts novels - preferably at, or up to 100 points above, their Lexile. They will read for 20 minutes a night (30 minutes for Advanced Students) a minimum of 4 nights per week. The goal is for our Regular Students to pass 2 or more Reading Counts quizzes per grading period and for our Advanced Students to pass 3 or more Reading Counts quizzes per grading period.

Also, throughout the year, we will assign our students Challenge Based Learning projects. These projects will be a collaborative effort across their core curricula. The students will complete the projects as part of a group; therefore, the majority of their research and the creation of their final product will occur at school. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact us at any time.

8th Grade

The 8th Language Arts class will be participating in an exciting, challenging and rigorous adventure. It's an integrated curriculum designed to cover the four major areas of language : reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Assignments will include, but are not limited to grammar activities, vocabulary, writing samples and literature pieces. Assessments will be determined by a combination of daily assignments, homework, quizzes, tests, and projects.
